How it works
Nearby Apple devices pick up a tracker’s Bluetooth signal and report its location to iCloud, so you see it in the Find My app. Apple says the process is anonymous and encrypted, and that only the owner can see where an AirTag is.
Not just AirTag
Other makers build trackers for Find My too — round tags with a key-ring hole, wallet cards, rechargeable clips and bike alarms. They appear in the same Find My app. Many can also be switched to Google Find Hub (one network at a time), which is useful in a mixed iPhone/Android household. Most don’t have Ultra Wideband, which AirTag uses for Precision Finding.
Good to know
- Find My trackers can only be found in the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch.
- Share Item Location (iOS 18.2 or later) lets you share a lost item’s location with an airline or another person for up to seven days.
